| What is Chronic Lyme Disease? | ||||||||||||||||
The deer tick, which carries the Borrelia bugdorferi bacteria, is the size of a poppy seed in the nymph stage. To avoid catching the disease, do a body check after being in nature. This should be done each day for at least three days after being in nature. |
Chronic Lyme disease develops when a person has been infected with the bacteria Borrelia burgdorferi, receives treatment, yet continues to have symptoms. The infection is most often spread through tick bites. It is also called "post Lyme disease" or "persistent Lyme disease."
Experts do not agree on the number of people who have the disease, what tests are more reliable and what treatment is best. However, most do agree that the disease is under reported and the number infected is growing all over the United States.
Additionally, while “Lyme disease” refers to infection from the Borrelia bacteria, many people with Lyme disease will also have infections from other bacteria and parasites that are also carried by the same ticks. Grouped together, they are called “vector-borne infections.” Diagnosing these infections and treating them early may have a significant impact on whether a Lyme disease patient sees improvement.
